2014 saw the Sydney Morning Herald name her “The next big thing.” The following few years followed suit, as she developed her production chops & started finding her sound. Now, fresh off of a year out of the spotlight to fine tune her craft and focus on cultivating creative relationships with the likes of D.R.A.M., BJ the Chicago Kid, and the Social Experiment, Sydney’s Milan Ring is poised for a 2017 takeover.
We caught up with Milan during the release of her new beat tape to pick her brain and drop something special for the fans. Catch the exclusive world premiere for the visuals from the title-track, “VFT”, below.
RLGT Up-Next: Meet Milan Ring
The Divine timing: just one of the many things that nature serves to remind us of, with the beautiful but deadly Venus Fly Trap acting as its greatest exemplar.
If there is one thing that Milan Ring has learned over the last 3 years, it’s that timing is everything. Rising to notability in 2014, the native of Sydney, Australia spent much of 2015 and 2016 emerged in the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, learning closely from acclaimed producer Neff-U (who holds production credits for Dr. Dre & Kendrick Lamar amongst others) and taking time to grow her craft alongside some of the brightest up-and-comers. Finally, after a series of collaborations and writing gigs, and some patient waiting from fans, 2017 is laid out to be a big one for the singer-songwriter-producer. The timing is right.
Serving as the first release from her own recently established MXMAY label, Venus Fly Trap is a 6 track beat tape that will precede the release of her 2nd EP later this year. In body the project is experimental – fusing electronic formulas with R&B sounds, and a touch of latin dance sensuality to top it all off. And the vibes? Each track brings something a little different, as Ring flexes on each instrumental. One standout, “RUFLNIT” (R-U-FEELIN-IT), brings a grimy hip-hop bassline interlaid with hits of strings and snares, before mesmerizing with Ring’s Jorja Smith-eque vocals on the sultry hook. Another, the title track “VFT” brings the listener somewhere completely different. Slinking synths salsa with hand drums, while Ring shows off only a small taste of her guitar skills with some clean & simple riffs.
The diverse sounds on display in the project are a direct outcome of the unique recording techniques utilized by Ring during the months of recording. Of the process, she notes:
The whole project was written between my home studio in Sydney, LA, & studios I have set up in different locations in more rural country spots all around Australia. The environment that I am in definitely changes the way I work and the sound that comes through…Visually I wanted this to translate as well. [For one recording,] we literally set up this “office” in the middle of the night, in the middle of the bush, running hundreds of meters of extension leads to power up the studio, whilst trying to dodge spiders and bull ants and watch out for snakes. It was hilarious but mad fun.
Today, Milan blesses the RLGT fam with an exclusive look at the visuals for “VFT”, which are a part of a full set of accompanying visuals for the project, all shot by esteemed fashion videographer Fling Fling.
