Justin Samuels: Girl You’re Free is about a woman who leaves a controlling, abusive
man. What inspired you to do this song?
KC: I knew of situations from friends and family members. I’d rather not call names. As a child growing up seeing that I always said I would never go down that lane. Growing up with it and seeing celebrity cases where battered women turned up missing made the matter even more real to me.. Also I want to do songs that express and reach out to the world. I’m not interested in only appealing to a small group of people.
J.S.: How did you feel when you’re video, Diggy, Diggy, received multiple
plays on the BET show Uncut?
KC: Wonderful. An independent artist making a major network without the backing of a major music label is a huge accomplishment. I feel God has set my destiny as a star. I’m thankful. God is good as I continue the journey which gets harder.
J.S.: What was it like working on the film What Goes Around?
KC: Great. I was a role model by playing such a good part. The experience was nice and smooth as I showed everyone love and support. We all worked together wonderfully.
J.S.: What was your inspiration in becoming a musician in the first place?
KC: Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Kenny Rogers to name a few. I listened to them when I was a small child. I came from a musical family containing people such as Marcia Griffiths, Queen of Reggae, Bob, Andy, and others. Because of this I recited poems, sang, and danced. I also had the urge to just show people love, even if they were violent towards others. It was a spiritual thing.
J.S.:Of all your music, which song is your favorite?
KC: I love all my songs. Each song brings a different mood to the table. That’s what makes me unique and stand out from the rest. Being able to flow on any type of genre tracks. I just love it. I love all my songs. I can’t let them get jealous of the next song, lol.
J.S.:You’re self produced, right? Do you produce any other artists?
KC: I am produced by a few mutli-platinum producers from NYC and Atlanta. But for the last year or 2 now I am doing it all myself. After mastering the business, I learned how to hire the team I needed to take things to the next level. Some major deals are being discussed now.
J.S.Any upcoming projects that you’d like to talk about?
KC: A few upcoming projects as I work on an EP. It’s my first one ever for the majors. I’m doing until I make my next album, which will be really emotional. I’ve been doing all singles. I never did an album and I’m always told to do a album. I was awaiting on the right distribution deals and the right team. So I am ready now.
