The latest trend today in music is electronic music.[1] Waves of DJ’s are turning up all over the place. Hip hop, trance, techno, house, pop, and so on and so forth. It is an acquired skill because a DJ has to be able to operate the mechanics of a soundboard and be able to have excellent timing in order to bring the sounds together to produce something that makes sense. Every other person today wants to become a DJ because it entails fame, money, and music. Who wouldn’t want a life like that? But with so many of them, it’s evidently not that easy.
My concern lies in the fact that we’re losing the true essence of music in this ‘mix’! I am no way putting out a negative view towards “DJing” because I myself find it fascinating, and I recognize the skill and passion that goes into producing a lot of this music. However, I fear that we’re losing the roots of music by taking all the classics and mixing them and bumping them up to the 21st century. Is there no way to salvage classical music and so many of the genres long gone and nearly forgotten?
Soon the trend will fade, and something new will arise, and so the cycle continues. But as time goes by, it becomes more and more important to reintroduce the music of centuries gone by! Playing at least an instrument should be implemented into our children’s upbringing. If for nothing else, then at least to give them that scope into the fact that music isn’t just taking different bits and pieces and moulding them together only, but it the sound has to come from somewhere- and that they can be the ones to produce it themselves! It would be great for them to learn that from just one instrument a whole piece of music can be made. That sometimes, music can be thought-provoking- that it can take you back in time and that its history is so rich that it cannot be forgotten.
There’s nothing wrong with the music of today, but there’s certainly nothing wrong with the music of generations gone past! Every song tells a story for individuals and cultures- every instrument has a historical background and there are so many instruments that we don’t even know exist! We need to learn about the music of the world, from the tiny villages! Do their songs tell their stories or are they fantasies or are they both mixed together to form a moral? I have had enough of the song that contains sex and violence and drugs and dysfunctional families and mental disorders and teenage angst- yes, it is expression. But at the same time it sure wouldn’t kill to look back and compare notes perhaps. You might be surprised with what you find. Whether you’re surprised or not, at the very least you’ll have earned yourself a priceless education and a reminder that music has its roots in something much deeper than we perceive today.
